Zines and Online Publications
bitch touts itself as a "feminist response to pop culture". and to be honest, it is perhaps the best magazine for wimmin that i have ever read. i got turned onto it when i was taking wimmin's studies classes. however, it isn't all fun and games. some of it is really intellectual in that "art fag" kind of way that you will love if you get wet over theory. bitch is great if you dig "third wave" feminism. bust's tag is that they are "the voice of the new girl order". to be honest, i would say it verges a little more towards the spice girls kind of "girl power" than real riot grrl action, but it's still spastically better than any YM or Cosmo could ever hope to be. plus, their website has some great e-post cards with that fifties romance novel feel to them. the disgruntled housewife completely confuses me. i have no idea why she put this site up, or what she is about, and that makes me really happy. she is seemingly het, but pays homage to "naked ladies" of playboy, and just generally seems to say whatever the hell she wants (including a "dick" list of every guy who has ever pissed a womyn off). it's another site with that great fifties retro look, which always makes me want to put on a slinky dress and gloves and go be sexxy somewhere. like a bowling alley. also, she has more grrl related links than you can shake a dildo at. if you were into that kinda thing. geek girl is an e-zine that has a great lay out. it mixes that little personal feel with some really professional lay out and resources. though kind of silly at times, it's a site i want to start exploring more fully, plus, it has a good collection of geeky accessories like wallpapers and background tiles. geeky girl is a great starting place for you if you want to start navigating the web like a pro. she has put tutorials about building web pages and other geek past times that would be really helpful to any beginner. though her site is far from a professional looking e-zine, she has the added bonus of a riot grrl mentality. riotgrrl isn't brilliantly unique, but it's cute and there are some good articles. one of my favourite items is a "feed the supermodel" game, where you get to feed skinny girls like jennifer love hewitt until they look like healthy people again. smile and act nice is a great e-zine. it is laid out really well (which is one of the requisites to putting it on my link page, i mean, i hate going to links that hurt my eyes) and it had a definite riot grrl feel. there is even a gallery where you can submit your art work for display. it just reminds me of the D.I.Y joy that a couple of chicks armed with flyers and wheat paste can bring to the world. |
Activists, Teachers and Role Models
Betty Dodson, though having a rather un-attractive site, offers lots and lots of advice and wisdom about healthy female sexuality. And who couldn't use a few tips? Carol
Queen will make you feel empowered and open to anything if you read
her long enough. An editor and a writer, Queen has also made educational
videos promoting the joys of buggery for wimmin (on the giving end). Tristan Taormino lives the life you might wish you could. She goes all over having sexual adventures, and then gets paid to write about them. I saw her speak in LA, and there really is almost nothing this girl hasn't done or seen, and she wants to educate the rest of the world in how to have 'ecstatic sex'. She's my new hero. Resources and Useful Products
The Female Health Company though I've never used one, it's nice to know you have the option of a female condom. Plus, I hear they're just great for anal sex. Find out more about them at this site. Good Vibrations has been promoting sexual health and pleasure for a long time. Based in San Francisco, they are a fantastic source for all things orgasmic. Owned and operated by wimmin, I am especially impressed with their catalogue, which rates videos for things like appeal, story and safer sex. Plus, they have an online vibrator museum. House of Chicks is home to Vulva U. Their mission is to educate and empower female sexuality to help wimmin realize their sexual potential. Toys in Babeland is owned and operated by kick-ass wimmin. Wouldn't you rather trust them than some sleezy porn shop? The Ultimate Birth Control Resource Don't want to have a baby? Me neither.
