It's not that you didn't play with Barbies when you were
a kid, it's just that every time you were alone, you made them have
sex with eachother. It's not that you didn't like the other kids, it's
that none of them could compare with your teacher. It's not that you
couldn't pay attention in class, it's that you were right in the middle
of writing a short story. You were a dreamer, or an outcast. You dressed
wrong, you liked the wrong celebrities. You were never into Corey Haim
but you thought Wil Wheaton was dreamy.
You yell at the television. You would rather fall asleep at the wheel
than give your money to Starbucks. You are sick of having awkward silences
after you state your political beliefs. You have been kicked out school,
your house, or fired from a job because you couldn't keep your mouth
shut. You don't want babies. You want babies but you don't want to get
married. You want to get married but you're not legally allowed to.
People call you slutty. People call you weird. Your parents sigh a lot
when you talk to them. Your siblings tell you they're confused by you.
You meet people online. You've named your computer. You've had impure
thoughts about your computer. A lot of the time, you'd rather write
code than deal with people. You screen your calls.
You like being Politically Incorrect. You talk about gender as a social
class. You believe that everyone is in costume. You like to change your
costume. You believe in appending yourself. When you were a kid you
gave yourself tattoos with Magic Marker and painted your fingernails
with white out.
You read sci-fi. You read comics. You watch professional wrestling.
You like foreign films. You like porn. You admit to masturbating. You
make dates with yourself. You never recognise yourself, or any of your
friends, in mainstream media. You like John Waters. Sometimes, you want
to shout from roof tops.
You're not afraid to be hard. You're not afraid to be
soft. You know that nothing you do today has to be true for tomorrow.
You're not afraid to try new things. Every day is a new thing.
Or maybe you're none of these things. Maybe none of this applies. The
point is, that's where this page came from. From asking questions, from
being turned off by popular media. By needing a place for expression.
This website has a lot of voices, a lot of different beliefs. The only
common thread is that everyone who contributes feels a need to challenge
identity and preconception. Maybe you don't agree with everything, but
you can still take what you can use.
This site is about stepping outside of your comfort zone. Like falling
in love with your best grrl-friend when you're 12. Like listening to
pop music, and realising it has nothing to do with your life. Like watching
commercials and realising theyreally don't care about you. Like trying
sushi for the first time, even though it's raw fish. Like putting on
glasses for the first time, and realising just how blind you were before,
now that you can see.
The point is, there really isn't one point. I put this
site up because I know there are thousands of people wandering through
the net with similar thoughts running through their heads; people who
are sick of making apologies for who they are, even to the subcultures
that preach their "individuality". This site is about queers, comics
and civil disobedience. This site is about fniding words that match
your feelings. This site is about speaking up, and speaking out. So,
take a look at what other people are saying, and feel free to leave
your own mark, too.
